EconDash

MCP server

Connect EconDash to ChatGPT, Claude, Grok, Gemini, Cursor or VS Code. A free, read-only MCP server for economic indicators from the World Bank, IMF, FRED and other public sources.

EconDash runs a remote Model Context Protocol server. Connect it to your AI assistant and ask about GDP, inflation, unemployment, population and other indicators for any country. The assistant gets the figure, its source, licence and a link to the EconDash chart.

  • URL: https://mcp.econdash.org/mcp
  • Transport: Streamable HTTP
  • Authentication: none
  • Price: free
  • Access: read-only; the server never changes data and never takes payments

Connect

Claude (claude.ai, Desktop, mobile)

  1. Settings → Connectors → Add custom connector.
  2. Name: EconDash, URL: https://mcp.econdash.org/mcp. Click Add.
  3. In a chat, turn on EconDash in the tools menu.

Details: Getting started with custom connectors.

Claude Code

claude mcp add --transport http econdash https://mcp.econdash.org/mcp

ChatGPT

  1. Settings → Apps & Connectors → Advanced settings → turn on Developer mode (available on eligible plans).
  2. Create a connector: name EconDash, MCP server URL https://mcp.econdash.org/mcp, authentication No authentication.
  3. In a chat, pick the EconDash connector.

Grok (grok.com)

  1. Open grok.com/connectors → New Connector → Custom.
  2. Name EconDash, URL https://mcp.econdash.org/mcp, no authentication.
  3. Turn the connector on in a chat.

Gemini CLI

gemini mcp add --transport http econdash https://mcp.econdash.org/mcp

Or in ~/.gemini/settings.json:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "econdash": { "httpUrl": "https://mcp.econdash.org/mcp" }
  }
}

Cursor

In ~/.cursor/mcp.json or .cursor/mcp.json of your project:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "econdash": { "url": "https://mcp.econdash.org/mcp" }
  }
}

VS Code

In .vscode/mcp.json:

{
  "servers": {
    "econdash": { "type": "http", "url": "https://mcp.econdash.org/mcp" }
  }
}

Menus in the assistants change often. If a step looks different, follow the provider's current guide for adding a remote MCP server; the URL stays the same.

Tools

All tools are read-only and marked so with MCP tool annotations.

ToolWhat it doesInputs
search_indicatorsFinds indicators by keyword. Returns up to 25 matches with slug, name, unit, frequency, source and years covered.query, limit (1–25, default 10)
get_indicator_seriesValues of one indicator for one country or region: the latest observed values, a range of years, or one value for a given year. Up to 30 values per call for annual data, 40 for quarterly, 120 for monthly, 52 for weekly and 250 for daily (about 30 years of annual data, 10 years of quarterly or monthly, a year of weekly or daily). Includes unit, source, licence, the periods with data and a chart link. Projections such as IMF forecasts are labelled.indicator, country (ISO3), start_year, end_year, year (all optional)
compare_countriesOne indicator for up to 20 countries or regions, for a given year or the latest value in each.indicator, countries (ISO3 list), year (optional)
get_indicator_detailsDescription, unit, frequency, source, publisher, licence, attribution text, coverage and the time of the last data change.indicator
list_countriesCountries and regional aggregates (for example WLD, EUU) with ISO3 codes.none

Without year or end_year, a series stops at the latest observed value. If a forecast exists for later years, it comes in a separate next_projection field and is never presented as a fact. With end_year, forecasts up to that year are part of the series and marked by projected and projected_from.

When a range holds more values than one call returns, the latest ones come back with truncated: true. history_available names all periods with data, and the chart link shows the full history.

Example questions

  • "What is the latest GDP per capita of Germany according to EconDash?"
  • "Compare GDP per capita of Germany, Japan and Brazil in 2010 using EconDash."
  • "Inflation in Argentina according to EconDash, and the IMF forecast for next year."
  • "How did inflation in Argentina change over the last 20 years according to EconDash?"
  • "Which EconDash indicators cover youth unemployment?"
  • "Unemployment in Spain vs Germany in 2015, with sources."
  • "What is the source and licence of the EconDash CO2 emissions per capita data?"
  • "Population of India and China in 2023 according to EconDash."

Limits

The server is free and shared, so it has rate limits:

  • clients connecting directly (Claude Code, Cursor, VS Code, Gemini CLI, scripts): 30 tool calls per minute and 500 per day per IP address;
  • requests from the servers of AI platforms such as ChatGPT and Claude have separate, higher limits shared by their users.

Over the limit, the tool returns an error such as Too many requests, try again in 40 seconds. and the assistant can retry later. For bulk downloads use the data API instead.

Errors

Errors come back as tool errors with a plain-English message the assistant can act on:

MessageMeaning
No indicator '…' in EconDash. Use search_indicators to find the slug.Unknown indicator slug
Unknown country or region code '…'. Use list_countries for valid ISO3 codes.Unknown ISO3 code
No data for … in … for 1989. Available periods: …The series has no value for that year or range
start_year … is after end_year ….The range is reversed
Give either year for a single value or start_year/end_year for a series, not both.year combined with a range
No indicators match '…'. Try a shorter or more general term.Search found nothing

Privacy

The server receives only the tool name and its arguments (indicator, country codes, year, search words). It never receives your conversation or your account with the AI platform, and its log stores no IP addresses. Full details: Privacy Policy. Use of the server is covered by our Terms of Service, and the data by the source licences listed on Data licenses.
