Data licenses
EconDash shows every series on this site and offers the same series through the paid API. That access does not give you a right the original source withheld. If you copy a figure, follow the row for that source and name both the source and EconDash.
What you can do
- Quote a number in an article, a paper, or a chart of your own, with the attribution in the table.
- Embed or share a chart where the product offers it. The source license still applies to the numbers inside the chart.
- Use a series in an AI product only when that source allows it. FRED and the IMF restrict model training. Reading a chart on this site is not the same thing as training a model on the series.
How to attribute
Name the original publisher first, then EconDash, and link the series page. Example: “United States GDP, source: World Bank, via EconDash (econdash.org).” Keep a copyright sentence when the source prints one. Do not say that the source, or EconDash, endorses your work.
Sources
Commercial reuse means copying the series into your own paid product, API, or database. “Yes, with attribution” follows the licence linked in that row. “Restricted” and “No” mean the source’s own terms limit or refuse that reuse. “Unclear” means the published page did not settle it. Links below are the official terms, not a summary from memory.
| Source | License | Commercial reuse | Attribution |
|---|---|---|---|
| World Bank | CC BY 4.0 World Bank dataset terms | Yes, with attribution | The World Bank: dataset name. Third-party indicators inside the catalog can carry a different licence. The series we store from the World Bank API are under CC BY 4.0 unless their own metadata says otherwise. |
| FRED | FRED Terms of Use FRED legal notices | Restricted | Name the original publisher and FRED. Public-domain and citation-required series may be shown with attribution. Series whose notes contain a copyright statement need the owner's permission beyond personal use. FRED's API terms restrict storing the feed in another database, reselling the service, and using the content in AI systems. |
| Our World in Data | CC BY 4.0 Our World in Data FAQ | Yes, with attribution | Our World in Data, plus the underlying source named on the series. Our CO2 and energy series are OWID's own compilation. Other OWID tables follow the original provider's licence. |
| IMF Primary Commodity Prices (via FRED) | IMF Copyright and Usage IMF copyright and usage | Restricted | Source: International Monetary Fund. FRED's series notes mark these as copyrighted by the IMF. The IMF asks for written permission before commercial reuse, and forbids model training without permission. |
| IMF | IMF Copyright and Usage IMF copyright and usage | Restricted | Source: International Monetary Fund, and the database name. Statistical data may be redistributed with attribution. The same page asks you to email copyright@imf.org before commercial reuse. If you sell the data on its own, tell buyers it is free from the IMF. |
| U.S. Census Bureau | U.S. government work, citation requested FRED legal notices | Yes, with attribution | U.S. Census Bureau (and HUD, where the series says so) via FRED. These series are fetched through FRED. No copyright sentence was present in the FRED notes. |
| WHO GHO | CC BY 4.0 WHO dataset terms | Yes, with attribution | World Health Organization, dataset name, year, access date. One series in this source record is a World Bank API indicator and follows the World Bank terms. |
| BLS | U.S. government work, public domain BLS copyright information | Yes, with attribution | U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics via FRED. |
| ECB | ECB statistics reuse policy ECB statistics reuse policy | Yes, with attribution | Source: ECB statistics. If you charge for a document that includes the figures, tell the buyer the statistics are free from the ECB. Do not change the figures without saying so. |
| OECD | OECD Terms and Conditions OECD terms and conditions | Unclear | Source: OECD. The official terms page is the licence document. On 9 October 2026 it did not return the reuse clause to an automated read, so this row does not claim a Creative Commons licence. |
| EIA | U.S. government work, public domain EIA copyrights and reuse | Yes, with attribution | U.S. Energy Information Administration. Series taken from FRED should also name FRED. |
| Eurostat | Eurostat copyright and reuse policy Eurostat copyright notice | Yes, with attribution | Source: Eurostat. Commercial reuse does not cover third-party data, or figures for countries other than the EU, EFTA, and official candidate countries. The United Kingdom rows in our Eurostat series fall outside that permission. |
| ILO ILOSTAT | CC BY 4.0 ILO rights and permissions | Yes, with attribution | International Labour Organization, ILOSTAT. ILO datasets published on or after 3 May 2023 are under CC BY 4.0. Older datasets keep the licence printed on that dataset. |
| ITU | CC BY 4.0 World Bank dataset terms | Yes, with attribution | The World Bank. The compiler of these indicators is the ITU. We store the World Bank API series, not a separate ITU feed. |
| UN Population Division | CC BY 4.0 for the World Bank series World Bank dataset terms | Unclear | World Bank series: The World Bank. Median age: United Nations Population Division. Four series come from the World Bank API. Median age is fetched from the UN Data Portal. Its licence page did not return terms text, so that indicator has no licence fields. |
| Yahoo Finance | Yahoo Terms of Service Yahoo terms of service | No | Yahoo Finance. Yahoo's terms forbid reproducing, selling, or building a database from the service content without written permission. |
| Federal Reserve | U.S. government work, public domain Federal Reserve disclaimer | Yes, with attribution | Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System via FRED. |
| NAR | FRED Terms of Use FRED legal notices | Restricted | National Association of Realtors or Realtor.com via FRED. Existing-home sales carries a copyright notice in the FRED notes. The inventory series does not. NAR's own copyright page is at https://www.nar.realtor/copyright. |
| UNESCO UIS | CC BY 4.0 World Bank dataset terms | Yes, with attribution | The World Bank. UNESCO Institute for Statistics compiles the literacy series. |
| Alternative.me | Fear and Greed attribution terms Alternative.me Fear and Greed Index | Yes, with attribution | Alternative.me, next to the figure. Commercial display is allowed when the attribution sits beside the data. Do not present the index as Alternative.me's own product. |
| ATA (American Trucking) | U.S. government work, citation requested FRED legal notices | Yes, with attribution | U.S. Bureau of Transportation Statistics via FRED. The stored series is the BTS truck-tonnage index on FRED, not a separate ATA feed. |
| Calculated indicators | CC BY 4.0 CC BY 4.0 | Yes, with attribution | Calculated by EconDash from World Bank series. CC BY 4.0. |
| Federal Reserve / BEA | U.S. government work, citation requested FRED legal notices | Yes, with attribution | U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis via FRED. |
| FHFA / MBA | U.S. government work, public domain Federal Reserve disclaimer | Yes, with attribution | Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System via FRED. |
| FHFA / S&P Case-Shiller | Third-party copyright via FRED FRED legal notices | No | S&P Dow Jones Indices LLC via FRED. The FRED notes say: Copyright, 2016, Standard & Poor's Financial Services LLC. Reprinted with permission. That permission was granted to FRED. |
| FHWA | U.S. government work, citation requested FRED legal notices | Yes, with attribution | U.S. Federal Highway Administration via FRED. |
| ICE / Trading Economics | Yahoo Terms of Service Yahoo terms of service | No | Yahoo Finance. The stored series is the Yahoo Finance ticker TTF=F. Yahoo's terms forbid reproducing or selling that content without permission. |
| OICA | U.S. government work, citation requested FRED legal notices | Yes, with attribution | U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis via FRED. The stored series is BEA domestic auto production on FRED, not an OICA feed. |
| TIOBE Index / GitHub | No licence statement found TIOBE Index | Unclear | TIOBE. The index page does not state a licence. This indicator has empty licence fields. |
| WHO / National Surveys | CC BY 4.0 WHO dataset terms | Yes, with attribution | World Health Organization. The stored series is WHO GHO indicator MH_12. |
| WHO / UNICEF | CC BY 4.0 World Bank dataset terms | Yes, with attribution | The World Bank. The stored series is the World Bank immunization indicator SH.IMM.IDPT. |
| World Bank (ILO) | CC BY 4.0 World Bank dataset terms | Yes, with attribution | The World Bank. |
| Moscow Exchange | No redistribution terms found MOEX ISS API | Unclear | Moscow Exchange. The ISS API page describes access. It does not state a licence for redistributing IMOEX. This indicator has empty licence fields. |
| Calculated: GNI minus depreciation | CC BY 4.0 CC BY 4.0 | Yes, with attribution | Calculated by EconDash from World Bank series. CC BY 4.0. |
| Calculated: exports minus imports | CC BY 4.0 World Bank dataset terms | Yes, with attribution | The World Bank. Stored from the World Bank API. |
Indicators without a source record
Nine active indicators are not attached to one of the sources above. Three of them are BIS statistics and six are FAO food-price indexes.
| Source | License | Commercial reuse | Attribution |
|---|---|---|---|
| BIS | BIS terms and conditions BIS terms and conditions | No | Bank for International Settlements. Three active indicators have no source record. BIS allows non-commercial redistribution. The statistics in the BIS Data Portal are excluded from the short-extract rule. |
| FAO | CC BY 4.0 FAO statistical database terms | Restricted | Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. CC BY 4.0. Six food-price indicators have no source record. FAO's database terms add a ban on using the datasets to promote a commercial product. |
Three indicators have no licence URL stored, because the official page did not state one: the TIOBE index, the MOEX index, and UN median age. Chart pages omit the schema.org license field for those series. The service terms for accounts and payments are separate: Terms of Service.
